Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. This checklist will help you prepare for your puppy's first week.
Before You Bring Your Puppy Home
Essential Supplies
- **Food and Water Bowls** - Choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls that are easy to clean.
- **Puppy Food** - Ask the breeder or shelter what food the puppy is currently eating and buy the same brand.
- **Collar and Leash** - Get an adjustable collar and a lightweight leash for training.
- **Crate** - A properly sized crate for sleeping and training.
- **Bedding** - Soft, washable bedding for comfort.
- **Toys** - Chew toys to help with teething.
Day 1-2: Settling In
The first 48 hours are crucial. Keep things calm and quiet. Let your puppy explore their new environment at their own pace.
- Show them where their food, water, and bed are
- Take them outside frequently for potty breaks
- Give them plenty of rest time
- Introduce them to too many people at once
- Leave them alone for long periods
- Overwhelm them with new experiences
Day 3-7: Building Routine
- Feeding times (3-4 times daily for puppies)
- Potty breaks (every 2-3 hours)
- Playtime and training sessions
- Sleep schedule
Warning Signs to Watch
- Not eating for more than 24 hours
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Excessive lethargy
- Difficulty breathing
